you can search the census index's
National Archives Documents Online
you can search their documents online which include wills, Campaign medals, Seamans medals, and the Doomsday book.
FreeBMD enables you to search the Civil Registration index's for the GRO Reference numbers for Births Marriages and Deaths. This will then allow you to send off for the certificates at a reduced cost from the GRO (General records office). At the moment with the ref no. they charge £7 for a certificate.
This is an ongoing project where the index's are being transcribed by volunteers. If you do not find what you are looking for its worth rechecking every couple of months or so.
Freecen is the same project as the freebmd but is for the census.
Freereg again is the same project and has only just last month gone live (Sept 2006). This project is for Parish registers.
Family Search The IGI (International Genealogical Index) can be searched for parish records (Baptisms, Marriages and Burials)
Also the 1881 census has been transcribed and is freely available.
